The Hidden Fact Serena Stokes Writing in the Digital World-ENG1313 Professor Elizabeth Priest February 4, 2016
The Hidden Fact When thinking about making a better future for yourself, most outcomes include furthering your education. The first thing that comes along with higher education is the money aspect. Student loans and debt is a huge problem when it comes to a better education. According to Mitch Daniels people with outstanding loans a debt "are postponing marriage, childbearing and home purchases, and evidently limiting the percentage of young people who start a business or try to do something entrepreneurial," (Holland,2015). This is a very concerning problem, not only is it holding back individuals but also preventing many from even starting. Though getting a degree has always come along with a better and more finically stabled future, the talk of loans and debt seem to be missed. According to Holland (2015), studies have shown that college graduates with a degree are in fact better financially stable; the fact that is not shown is the amount of loans they have to pay back. With more than $1.2 trillion in outstanding student loan debt, 40 million borrowers, an average balance of $29,000; it’s not hard to see that the rising amount of student loans and debt will continue to increase. As far a degree, after graduating college students are still behind due to debt. Getting ahead is always the key but when paying back loans, day-to-day living can be a challenge. Along with not only bills and the daily cost of living, graduates are also expected to pay back the thousands of dollars they owe for their student loans. Basically ending up where they started, students are pushed into a corner when trying to balance life along with loans and debt. Though the loans and debt set back graduates, many parents still believe that it is very important to higher your education. The consequences that follow loans and also debt, are very strict. Even though the loans are not due to be paid back until after graduation; if not paid back the outcome can be horrible. If a student does not finish out a school year completely, then the payments must begin immediately. Financial Aid gives money for majority of the cost of college expenses; yet the part left to pay has to come out of pocket or from loans. There are two different types of loans, Subsidized Loans and Unsubsidized Loans; both of which has to be repaid. It’s best to try to acquire grants and scholarships, but sometimes loans are still necessary. Every new year the student has to fill out a FASFA application to see how much money Financial Aid will give, the rest after that is usually loans. Colleges fail to communicate the fact of the cost of college, such as in-state and out-state tuition. In conclusion, moving forward with education has an extremely bright future behind it, yet all factors must be considered. The cost of college has many behind the scene expenses that also come along with tuition and loans. Student debt causes much frustration in not only the graduate, but also the parents. Having to paid back in certain amounts, loans cause a major setback for those trying to continue on with life after college. Though the price of colleges continues to increase, financial aid and loan services will still give the money because it is a known fact that it will get paid back.
